Meditation Tips: Preparing Your Space
One of the most important aspects of maintaining a meditation practice is easily overlooked, the space in which you practice.
One of the greatest things about meditation is that you don't really need any accessories to do it. Theoretically all you need is a place to sit down and you're good to go (I recomend meditating with Binaural Audio recordings that induce deep meditative states instantly). However, to achieve the ideal meditative atmosphere a little bit of planning will go a long way.
Step 1: Clean your room of any unnessesary items.
Now you don't need to build an oriental style meditation room like the one pictured here, but one thing to notice in this room is the lack of clutter. Clutter in your room will unconsciously interfere with your ability to relax. Clutter in the room is reflected as clutter in the mind.
Step 2: Make sure your room is relatively quiet.
You can't meditate deeply if you are constantly being distracted by noises or other people. Plan your meditations for a time when the kids are at school, the house is calm and you can relax into your meditation. Of course the method of meditation we'll be using with binaural audio will cancel out some outside noises, but it is still good to have the room as quiet and peaceful as possible.
Step 3: Prepare a comfortable pillow or chair to sit on.
To gain the maximum benefit from meditation it is essential that your body is comfortable. If you are comfortable with sitting crosslegged on the floor, do this with a small but firm pillow placed under your buttocks. Zen meditators use a rather high pillow of 10 inches or so, but I prefer one a bit lower, around 5 or 6 inches. Experiment with whatever pillows or cushions you have around the house, once you find your comfort zone I recommend getting a meditation pillow which is used only during meditation. This helps in creating the meditative atmosphere.
If you are more comfortable in a chair, that is fine but I recommend you to sit with your back straight, not leaned back or slouched in the chair. A straight spine will promote concentration and it is actually much more comfortable than slouching once you are used to it. Lying down on the floor is also a fine way to meditate. Be careful not to fall asleep though!
Step 4: Get some Quality Headphones.
The method of meditation I recommend requires the use of binaural audio. The secret to binaural audio is that a separate frequency sound is sent to each ear. The difference between those frequencies is same as the brainwave frequencies which naturally occur in deep meditation. This is how binaural audio causes your brain to naturally enter meditative states. Without quality headphones the ability of the mind to enter into these states is somewhat impaired. Of course any stereo headphones will work for binaural audio, but the effects are much more pronounced with quality headphones.
There you have it. Preparing your room for meditation is not something that requires a lot of effort. Just remember to keep the atmosphere peaceful. You could decorate your meditation area with pictures or statuettes of your favorite deities or inspiring artwork, whatever puts you in a state of mind conducive to relaxation.
Thank you for reading and I wish you the best of luck in your meditative and spiritual goals.
